CYPRESS INFANT SCHOOL

HOMEWORK NEWSLETTER – Summer 2
Nursery

This term’s theme is ‘Letters and Numbers’

This term we will be continuing learning about growing and animals but the focus will be to encourage the children to record their activities. We will be encouraging them to write their names on all their pictures and having a go at labelling them. We will also focus on counting objects and having a go at writing numerals wherever possible.
Activities will include:
·         Working with a partner –collaborative activities.
·         Talking about the beginning, middle and end of stories
·         Language of 1 more/1 less during counting and number rhymes.
·         Beginning  to recognise & make simple patterns
·         Simple number problems
·         Using positional language
·         Using symbols to represent ideas: emergent writing – name labels, lists, cards, books, price labels, and posters.
·         Dancing to a variety of music – what can our body do? Developing vocabulary to match movement – e.g. twist, turn, shake etc.
·         Naming animals and their babies.
·         Describing and sorting animals
·         Talking about “Summer” – What happens at this time of year?
·         Talking about how we have changed from being a baby and during this year. Also mentioning moving onto a new class.
·         Talking about our environment and how to reuse, repair and recycle.
·         Ball games to develop fine motor skills.
·         Parachute games (these are collaborative games).
·         Visiting the school wood and pond.
·         Visiting our new reception year classroom and class teacher

How you can help:
·         Develop conversation and “explaining” skills. Encourage the use of ‘because’ and the terms “Excuse me please”, “please”, “thank you”.
·         Talk about the parts of a book: title, author, illustrator, front, back whilst sharing books. Talk about story books and information books. How they are different?
·         Play I spy – e.g. I spy with my little eye something beginning with “b” is it the ball, car or apple? Or play the game where they find objects with the same initial sound – ball, book, and bear. Put the objects in a tray so the children have visual clues and they can pick them up and touch them.
·         Encourage their mark making and for them to “read it back”. If they are reluctant, you scribe for them on their pictures.
·         Counting forwards and backwards from 1-10– e.g. going up and down stairs, count toys as you put them away.
·         Playing  maths games. – Ludo, snakes and ladders, pairs, snap, dice games.
·         Describing animals – what am I? I have 4 legs, a long tail, 2 ears, whiskers and I say meow.
·         Naming animals and their babies – e.g. horse/foal.
·         Talk to them about the exciting changes that are happening in going into their reception class.
