What is an Extended School?

Extended schools provide a range of services and activities, often beyond the school day to help meet the needs of children, their families and the wider community. Previously the Government funded a small number of full service extended schools with a specific remit of services. There are two full service extended schools in Croydon, The Archbishop Lanfranc School and Fairchildes Primary School. Now the Government requires all children and families to be able to access a core of extended services which are developed in partnership with others. All children and families will be able to access the core offer through schools by 2010. Extended Schools: Access to opporunties and services for all sets out what is expected from an extended school.
Extended Schools will support the delivery of the Every Child Matters agenda
Schools are working alongside Children’s Centres and establishing extended services clusters to provide services to children, young people and their families. Schools are building partnerships with other agencies, such as the School Nursing Team, CAMHS and Out of School Providers to meet the needs of children and young people in the local area. There are over 75 schools actively working within a cluster to develop services. All schools will be invited to offer extended services by the end of the summer term 2008.
