What is Personalisation?

Dylan Wiliam distinguishes between individualised and personalised learning, whilst stressing the importance of enabling students to find different ways into learning activities.

The defining statement of and for personalised learning derives from a speech given by David Milliband to the North of England Conference May 2004.

Personalised Learning the Future of Public Service Reform?
Personalising Learning'
Decisive progress in educational standards occurs where every child matters; careful attention is paid to their individual learning styles, motivations and needs; there is rigorous use of pupil target setting linked to high quality assessment; lessons are well paced and enjoyable; and pupils are supported by partnership with others well beyond the classroom.
High expectation of every child, given practical form by high quality teaching based on a sound knowledge and understanding of each child's needs. It is not individualised learning where pupils sit alone at a computer. Nor is it pupils left to their own devices -which too often reinforces low aspirations. It can only be developed school by school. It cannot be imposed from above.'

'Personalisation is NOT a new DfES initiative -it is a philosophy in education. What is new is our drive to make the best practices universal across schools, particularly for children whose needs can be the most challenging to meet'

What is personalisation?
'All children are unique with different talents, different strengths and different weaknesses. Some children need extra help, support and encouragement to get the basics right; others need greater stretch and challenge to make the most of their potential. Personalisation is about recognising that, so that schools can and do tailor their teaching and wider support they offer to their pupils so that they can meet all their different needs'
