Statutory Duties
A local authority has a statutory duty to work in partnership with its schools to raise standards for all children and young people. This responsibility is discharged through the deployment of School Improvement Partners to monitor standards, and progress, challenge schools to improve provision and expectations. A part of the School Improvement Partner’s role is to help the school map out its future priorities and to broker further support from the LA. Camden’s School Improvement Service’s consultancy team provides support based on the principles of building sustainable capacity.
We believe that schools contain the skills, expertise and ability to solve many of their own problems and we will work in partnership with you to maximise your potential to develop and improve. Members of the team include accredited School Improvement Partners, Strategy Managers and consultants who are all experienced teachers, coaches and trainers. The team offers experience of leadership at all levels of a school including accredited School Improvement Partners and Ofsted inspection experience. A school Improvement Partner may be external to the LA or an employee of the LA .
Secondary Schools and Secondary Pupil Referral Units:
All schools receive an entitlement of 2.5 School Improvement Partner in-school days and 2.5 additional desk days. This is to cover the following functions:
Review of achievement and standards and performance data to determine annual statutory targets; monitoring & challenge of the School Improvement Plan to ensure it arises from robust and rigorous self-evaluation processes; headteacher performance management; annual review visit. All schools receive additional school-based consultancy support from the secondary team depending on need and capacity. Schools in an LA category of concern also gain access to additional support.
Service Level Agreement (SLA)
The majority of primary, some special and some secondary schools pay a lump sum to secure additional school-based support through a SLA (further details are in the SLA agreement for 2006-8). Schools opting out of the SLA can commission support on a pay-as-you-go basis subject to availability.
This booklet is not exhaustive but does provide some examples of both core and SLA support, which could be tailored to meet the needs of your school.
