RADWaste

Launch Video
On Thursday 5th July the RADWaste Project was launched at the Royal Geographic Society.

This innovative project tackles an environmental issue that will challenge this and subsequent generations.  It is critical therefore that the curriculum and teachers ensure that young people understand and explore the complex issues surrounding energy needs, sustainability and the environment.

These materials support learners and teachers to develop their understanding through innovative pedagogy which makes available expert witnesses and resources to support learning.

The project is based on the principles of BEHAVIOUR 4 LEARNING and links Science and Geography to aspects of English particularly those concerned with developing the skills of persuasion.

All the planning and other documentation that is required is provided to support the integration of this sequence of activities into existing schemes of work.

South Camden Community School
What makes the project of special interest to Camden is the involvement of students from South Camden Community School who have played a key role in developing the RAD Waste materials.  Led by their teacher Gerry Robinson they feature in video footage exemplifying the impact and value of the resources while at the same time bringing great credit to their school through the insights and maturity that they demonstrate in their contributions.

We hope that all schools in Camden will adopt the materials exploiting their quality and raising the awareness and standards of achievement in the areas detailed in the supporting planning documents.

Now Brief yourself...

‘…our Year 11 Geography results were the best we have ever had (67% - up from 55%). Several of the students involved in the project received A or A* grades and had achieved especially high marks on Paper 2 (Decision making). As you know, the decision making paper was something that our students have previously found difficult. The students who were involved in the RADwaste project definitely had an advantage over those who weren't, as they knew what to expect and had practised putting together a coherent argument, whilst considering other viewpoints.

Our uptake for AS level Geography has increased considerably and I have no doubt that this is owing to the involvement in projects such as RADwaste. The project definitely helped them to understand the importance of considering all perspectives. We will certainly use the project again with our next GCSE cohort and hopefully will see results continue to rise!’
