FAMILY GUIDE

Ty Goddard
Director
BCSE
June 2008

All of our children deserve to learn in school buildings that inspire them to give of their best. Whatever their needs, a good school environment will value them as people, their abilities and how they learn best. A good learning environment will support and nurture its children and staff.

This guide, kindly sponsored by BCSE member Morgan Ashurst, is aimed at parents and guardians and designed to provoke debate and ideas.

System Redesign - How to Transform Your School -March 08

This new 30 minute Teachers TV programme, although not directly about ICT, may help you (and colleagues) discuss how learning is structured and the direction of education in the near future. Clearly relevant to BSF/PCP, all schools need to be considering whether their processes and organisation are "fit for purpose". From the synopsis:

"In order to meet the needs of 21st century education, many schools are embracing the concept of System Redesign. This programme looks at this emerging trend and discusses whether it is the responsibility of the school or the government to bring about educational reform.

"System Redesign breaks down the concept of school into its most basic building blocks. It then analyses everything from curriculum to student leadership and decides whether it is relevant for learning in the future."

Advancing Opportunity:
New models of schooling

'Preparing for uncertainty...

Despite more students achieving more qualifications, employers continue to complain about the work readiness of new recruits. Increasingly the concerns expressed are not just about the three “R”s but about competences such as team working, adaptability, communication and problem solving. The future labour market is unpredictable, but it is widely assumed not only that these cross-cutting competencies will be as economically important as more traditional subject-based knowledge, but also that young people need them in order to be the successful citizens of tomorrow.'

Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive of the RSA
