German Trip 2009
Once again we had a very successful visit to our partner school ‘Grundschule an der Wied’ in Neuwied, Germany by children, parents and teachers of Warren Road School. Lena Pennacchia led the group of 9 children and 8 adults, accompanied by former Warren Road teacher Arlene Bryson-Ross.
The children spent the first morning (Thursday) at the Grundschule. Each child was able to sit in class with his/her German host child and so understood something of school life in Germany. They did not like having to be in school for 8 o’clock but were happy to find that school ended at 1 o’clock!
On Thursday afternoon, we enjoyed a variety of occasions together. The parents had a tour of Neuwied while the children visited the Ice Age museum.
On Friday, the English families had a lovely day in Cologne, many opting to climb all 500 steps to the top of Cologne cathedral! The highlight was the visit to the chocolate factory and the free chocolate from the chocolate fountain!
We had a wonderful social event at school on Friday evening, at which some of the English parents who had been before, were able to renew their acquaintance with their German friends. Members of the Town Twinning Association also attended.
On Saturday we all went down the Mosel by boat and then climbed up to Burg Eltz, a castle high above the bank of the river. We all made it to the top, despite it being a pretty steep climb!
It was a very enjoyable visit, even though the numbers were small. The parents are all keen that this event should continue and will do all they can to encourage other parents to take part in the next visit, which should be in October 2011.
