ART & DESIGN

Programme of study for year 7

Project 1  Colour and Painting

Pupils’ will be introduced to basic paint techniques and processes. Practical painting work is linked directly to the investigation of how Fernand Leger and Henri Matisse used colour in their work – this is, in turn, related to colour theory and the colour wheel [primary, secondary, tertiary, complementary colours etc. ]Contextual research and a basic critical understanding of artists’ work will be introduced.

Project 2  Gaudi Lizards

Pupils’ will investigate the mosaic work of Antoni Gaudi, this will serve as the springboard to introduce the medium of textiles (cutting, hand sewing and weaving). Pupils will use lizard drawing and paper collage, to develop their design work.

Project 3   Natural Forms

Pupils will study the work of Georgia O'Keefe, using her flower paintings to inform their own painting and drawing. Pupils will then use their 2D work to develop 3D ceramic sculptures.

Programme of study for year 8

Project 1  The Human Figure

A range of sources are used as the basis for this project. Initially, observation work [ pose, position and proportion ] is carried out in a range of media, covering the basic elements, line, texture and tone.

Proportion is investigated, with particular reference to Leonardo da Vinci and Picasso and the Expressionists are used as a starting point for expressive portraiture in mixed media. The concept of sketchbook development and process is practiced in a final self-generated, large-scale portrait.

Project 2  Still Life

This project will introduce the still life tradition, concentrating on the work of Seurat and Cezanne, and focusing on use of tone and composition in observational object drawing. Pupils will then extend their ideas into a painting or collage.

Project 3  Pattern

Pupils will make a series of drawings, looking at mechanical and natural objects. Using art & design work from different cultures to investigate the nature of pattern, pupils will produce a series of pattern based print work and painting.

Programme of study for year 9

Project 1  Exploring Abstraction

The basic principles of abstraction and abstract art are introduced through a series of 8 activity baseddrawing, painting and collage exercises. A critical and contextual research project is also produced on a chosen abstract artist. Using ideas and images from the sketchbook activities and the chosen artists’ work a final piece is developed in the sketchbook and extended using batik as a 2D medium.

Project 2 Buildings

Pupils will study the principles of perspective using their environment as a resource. They will use the paintings of Van Gogh to inform their 2D art work.

Project 3 Ocarina

Pupils will design and make a ceramic ocarina, using coiling and/or pinch pot construction techniques. The project will involve a contextual investigation of the ocarina. Pupils will incorporate animal forms, derived from secondary sources, in their design work taking into account the form and function of the ocarina as an artefact.

GCSE ART

Year 10

Autumn Term                          Still Life

An investigation of basic formal elements and a range of media and techniques, within the still life context, to develop and realise a fully finished drawing, painting or mixed-media work.

 Spring Term                           Myself

Produce a series of observational self-portraits, with a range of media and 2D elements. Use observational 2D work, collage, and construction to make still life studies of personal objects. Produce a contextual study on Pop Art. Produce a critical study on Peter Blake or another Pop artist. From the above, develop a self-portrait on the theme “Myself” – reflecting the ideas of Blake and /or Pop Art.

 Summer Term                        Pop Up Page

Design and make a pop up page for a children’s art book, illustrating an artist’s work chosen by the student.

 Year 11

 Summer Term

 Timed Test and coursework completion
