Homework is work that is set outside the timetabled curriculum. The purpose of homework is:

  • To develop an effective partnership between the school and parents in pursuing the aims of the school.
  • To consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding, particularly in literacy and numeracy.
  • To exploit resources for learning, of all kinds, at home.
  • To extend learning, for example, through additional reading.
  • To encourage pupils as they get older to develop the confident and self-discipline needed to study on their own.

It is recognised, however, that pupils participate in many activities out of school such as swimming, football, gymnastics, dance, scouts and guides. We value these activities and believe it necessary for pupils to appreciate that physical and social skills other than academic are important. Parents are encouraged to support their child’s commitment and school club arrangements

The school will provide information regarding homework set:

  • Key Stage 1 – by written or verbal instructions when additional homework other than reading is set.
  • Key Stage 2 – by writing the set tasks in the homework book and by verbal instructions.

Parents are invited to comment on their child’s work in the contact book when necessary.

The role of the pupils is:

  • To complete to the best of their ability and return the set homework within the given time.
  • To assist in the communication between home and school.

The role of the parent is:

  • To ensure that the homework is done in a suitable environment.
  • To make it clear to their children that homework is valued.
  • To support their children and where appropriate, share in the tasks, giving help, advice, encouragement and praise (without doing it for them!!)

Individual Needs

Homework may be set for an individual pupil if it is felt necessary, this may be for a special need or to finish work started in class. It will be left to the discretion of the teacher and parents are expected to support the setting of this work.
