Statement of Intent It is the responsibility of each class teacher to meet the individual needs of every pupil within his or her class. To do so fully, including the special needs of exceptionally able or talented pupils, requires the adoption of a whole school approach. Definition There is no accepted agreed definition of what constitutes an able gifted or talented pupil but a working definition of giftedness could be “An exceptional pupil is one who is outstanding in either potential or achievement in one or more spheres of activity which can be regarded as beneficial to the pupil and to society.” There are several aspects of exceptional ability that need recognition and should be taken into account.
- Physical ability
- Skill in visual and performing arts
- Mechanical/technological ingenuity
- Leadership and social awareness
- High intelligence
- Creativity (permeating each aspect)
Aims Therefore the aims of Brampton School for the able child are: To appoint a member of staff to lead and co-ordinate work relating to the talented & gifted child. To meet the needs of advanced development within the main stream curriculum. To provide a differentiated curriculum. To provide a range of extension material that will meet the demand for enrichment within the curriculum. To incorporate intellectual challenge through the quality rather than the quantity of work. To provide self-initiated and self-directed learning that will encourage the talented & gifted child to develop the attitude that knowledge is worth pursuing. To prepare them for an understanding of one’s relationships to others and society through a mentor system. To develop a skills based curriculum that will provide the necessary stimulating work. To liaise with parents and children, informing them of external activities which may be of interest. |
