Introduction

The purpose of this policy is to give the children in this school freedom to enjoy themselves without being hindered by other children’s actions. The aim of this policy is ‘prevention is better than cure’. A balance will be struck between rewards and punishments which will be clearly specified. Acceptable standards of behaviour among children will be made clear so effective teaching and learning can take place.

Individual circumstances will be taken into account, but pupils will learn from experience to expect fair and consistently applied standards of praise and punishments. Distinction will be made between serious and minor misdemeanours. This will be implemented by laying down certain codes of conduct for various activities and can be enhanced by involving the children in devising their own code of conduct for behaviour around the school.

Special emphasis will be placed on the prevention of bullying by adopting procedures to prevent it and appropriate action to protect and support the victim.

Principles have been proposed and standards worked out by consulting with teaching, non-teaching staff and midday supervisors. The Management team will monitor the way in which the policy is working and whether it achieves the desired results. It will be reviewed annually through discussion with all staff.
