Introduction to levels

From years 7 - 9, assessments are marked as a level. The level reached is an indicator of the skills that your daughter is working at in Geography. The list below shows the general skills that will be needed to reach each level.

Year 7 students should be working between levels 3 and 5

Year 8 students should be working between levels 4 and 6

Year 9 students should be working between levels 5 and 7

Assessment levels

  • Level 1 - you can give a simple description of what you see.
  • Level 2- you can describe what you see using appropriate geographical keywords.
  • Level 3 - you can describe what you can see using appropriate keywords and are beginning to explain what is happening.
  • Level 4 - you do everything in level 3 but now you are able to give a detailed explanation of what is happening. You show a clear understanding and give examples.
  • Level 5 - you complete everything for level 4, with some understanding of the impact of people’s decisions on the environment. You are aware that people have different views and so will have different opinions.
  • Level 6 - everything needed for level 5 with a detailed explanation of how people’s actions impact on the environment. You can explain how people manage environments and that this may lead to conflict.
  • Level 7 - you understand in detail the impact of people on the environment. You can explain how people manage environments and that this may lead to conflict and you are able to link this effectively to the idea of sustainable solutions.

Example

Each assessment has different requirements so the list of objectives will vary slightly between each topic. Below is an example of an assessment grid which your daughter will receive with each assessment showing what is required to reach each level.
