Year 7 - overview
- The local area
- describing and explaining features in the
Mill Hill area. The pupils take part in a walk around
Mill Hill as part of this unit, during which they complete an
environmental impact assessment.
- Map skills - including scale,
direction, grid references, contours and symbols.
- Settlement - exploring the
different types of settlement, the origins
of London, the factors that make a good settlement and an
investigation into the changes in the London Docklands.
- Population and migration
- how
and why world population has changed and the push and pull
factors behind major international migrations. Pupils take part
in role plays to learn more about the reasons behind
migration.
- Economic Activity
- exploring the world
of work and the different types of industry. Pupils create a
board game
to teach others about the differences between primary, secondary
and tertiary industry.
- Weather and climate
- examining the differences between world climates, how to
measure different types of weather and looking at how the school
creates its own microclimate.
Year 8 - overview
- Kenya
-
this unit includes the savanna ecosystem in Kenya and the
indigenous culture of the Maasai and Kikuyu peoples. Pupils will
complete a labelled diagram or collage of the ecosystem and
construct a model hut.
- Japan
-
pupils will look at the reasons behind Japan's success in the
field of high-tech industry, including car
manufacture and electronics.
- Italy
-
this unit looks at the environmental hazards faced by the
Italian people including volcanoes and earthquakes. Pupils
complete a newspaper front page
for an eruption of Mount Etna.
- India
- pupils look at the Indian culture and the
natural features of
the second most populous country in the world.
Year 9 - overview
- Environmental Issues - this unit addresses
many of the major issues facing the world today including the
future of Antarctica, the destruction of the tropical
rainforests, climate change and acid rain. Students take part in
a role play
debate on
Antarctica and solve a mystery to explain the role
of acid rain in affecting the European landscape.
- Development
- pupils examine the reasons why some countries are more
developed than others and complete a computer-based
investigation
to decide for themselves which nations are most developed. By
playing the
Trade Game,
students also learn to appreciate why international trade is
unfair, before designing and marketing their own Fairtrade product
- a possible solution to the problem.
- Rivers and Coasts -
pupils
complete their Key Stage 3 studies by examining the consequences
of coastal erosion and analyse the impacts of river flooding.
