About the 6th Form

Copthall School offers you the best start to any future career, be it employment or higher education, by combining the guidance and support of well-qualified staff with the chance to study a wide range of new and interesting subjects, in a structured school environment Students leave Copthall as young women with more academic qualifications and more social, personal and work-related skills than when they entered it.

Copthall expects the very highest standards of achievement from its students. Every girl who wants to join the Sixth Form, be she in our Year 11 or from other state or independent schools, has an individual interview with an experienced member of staff to choose the options best suited to her talents and abilities.

The Sixth Form is a chance to start afresh, but within a firm framework of support. All students spend an exciting one day induction course in June which aims to introduce them to life as a Sixth Former and gives them the opportunity to get to know one another better and to make new friends.

The teaching is excellent. There’s a good social network and loads of opportunities.’

Copthall tries to accommodate individual requirements whenever possible and offers a wide-ranging curriculum to meet the needs, aspirations and abilities of every student. Your GCSE results may decide which course you take but it is important to –

• Choose subjects you really enjoy:

A Levels are intellectually demanding and you may be studying a subject for 2 years – be sure you think that you will go on enjoying it for 2 years.

• Choose subjects you are good at:

You will need a point score at GCSE of approximately 5.3 or more if you want to do A Levels and 4.9 if you want to take 2 or AVCEs (point scores are calculated – A* = 8, A = 7, B = 6 etc., and the total divided by the number of GCSEs taken).

• Be sure your choice is compatible with any career you want to follow:

Leave the widest possible range of options open if you are unclear what you want to do next.

• Examine all options:

If you think you will not be able to cope with A Levels, explore other vocational courses.

Whatever you decide, Copthall will do the very best to help you choose what is right for you.
