What is happening to this woman? Who is she?

She is Emmeline Pankhurst, leader of the WSPU. It is May, 1914 and she is being arrested outside Buckingham Palace after attempting to present a petition to the King.

Members of the WSPU (Women's Social and Political Union) were called SUFFRAGETTES and by 1908 were willing to break the law in their campaign for votes for women.

There are different interpretations about the part played by the Suffragettes in the campaign for women's suffrage (the vote). On the one hand, their actions gained a lot of publicity, but on the other may have alienated potential supporters.
