Welcome to the English Department

During your time at The Compton you will develop key skills that will help you to access the three main areas of the English curriculum: reading, writing and speaking and listening. These skills will help you achieve in all subjects.

Whether you are in key stage 3 or key stage 4 , you will study a range of poetry, prose and texts published both "pre 1900" and "post 1900" as required by the National Curriculum. You will become familiar with literary texts by writers such as Shakespeare and Steinbeck. As well as non-fiction texts, for example speeches by influential individuals such as Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and more recently George W. Bush. You will also find yourself studying how websites, leaflets and newspapers convey their message to the reader.

These types of texts often have very clever ways of influencing the reader's point of view.

English teachers at The Compton use a wide variety of media (the internet, film, adverts, pictures and sound recordings) as well as interactive whiteboards in a range of learning activities that ensure that no matter what your prefered learning style, you will be prepared to achieve your very best.
