What does the Big Picture look like?

Today, Britain is a diverse, multi-cultural society where every individual is equal under the law. In London as many as three hundred different languages are spoken and our schools reflect this diversity.

Britain and London haven’t always been so diverse. Taking a look at history can help us understand how our population has changed over time and the reasons for this. People have been moving to and from Britain for hundreds of years. This is called immigration and emigration.

Jewish people are one of the many immigrant groups that has contributed to the richness of our society both now and in the past. This group of people is the focus of our local study.

2006 is the 350th anniversary of Jewish migrants to Britain. Click here for more information.

Jewish Communities in Britain

Within the Jewish communities in Britain and London there are huge variations: Judaism has splintered into Orthodox, Reform, Conservative and Liberal; some Jews are not religious at all; others have partners who are not Jewish and have not brought up their children in any Jewish tradition. Still others have converted to other world religions like Christianity. You need to remember this when reading or writing the word ‘Jew’.
