The Impact of Migration on Religion in Golders Green

To learn about Jewish customs you need to know some special words.

• Halacha refers to Jewish laws and observances.

• Shechita and kashrut refer to dietary laws.

• Kosher describes food that is seen as ‘pure and clean’ by Jewish people. This means that only the following may be eaten: plant eating animals with cleft hooves; and fish with scales. No scavengers or game meat may be eaten: pork and shellfish are considered ‘unclean’.

• The London Beth Din (literally House of Law) licenses kosher establishments.
