Working with tables and bar graphs.

Note that the bar graphs used below refer to Great Britain while the tables of figures shown refer to England and Wales. All the data is taken from the Office of National Statistics.

1. Using the table to the right, compare the percentages of:

  • different religious groups in England and Wales

with those for

  • the whole of London,
  • the Borough of Barnet,
  • a ward in the south west of the Borough of Barnet (039C)
  • and those for Golders Green.

Notice the percentage of people who have not stated their religion.

2. What reasons could there be for not wishing to state the religious group?

How might this affect the proportions of people of different religious affilitation?

3. Draw a pie chart to show the percentages of different religions in Golders Green and another for England and Wales.

What comparisons can you make?

4. Now look at the following bar graphs showing

(a) self employed as a percentage of all in employment; by religion 2003-2004.G.B. and

(b) percentages of people in employment in managerial and professional occupations: by religion and sex, 2003-2004, GB.

Which group has the highest percentage of people who are self-employed?
