The majority of our work in the Sixth Form centres around encouraging the boys to think about, and to prepare for, their future courses or employment.
The Management Skills Day, an optional event for the Lower Sixth, at the beginning of November is an opportunity for boys to work together in teams to respond to a variety of challenges.
The Careers Conversazione (our annual Careers Convention) is an evening for all Lower Sixth students. It offers an excellent opportunity for the boys to follow up on ideas from their Work Experience and to investigate new areas. The evening is a mixture of opportunities for individual conversations and attending some of the presentations on offer.
The “After Whitgift” evening, for parents and students, during the Lent Term signals the beginning of preparation for UCAS applications in the autumn. The evening is accompanied by an information booklet of the same name. Later in the year, the “After Whitgift” course focuses on Action Plans, UCAS applications, the Personal Statement, and Interviews.
We offer the Centigrade Higher Education questionnaire for all those students who feel that they need some assistance in choosing an appropriate subject and/or course of study.
Boys are encouraged to attend Taster Courses and University Open Days as part of their research. The school usually organise at least one group visit to an Open Day, depending on demand.
Towards the end of the Lower Sixth year all students are encouraged to make appropriate preparation for any university admission test that they might be required to take. In most cases, reading lists and exemplar material are available.
All students and their parents are strongly urged to make sure that they are at home when the examination results are published, and for at least one week after that, just in case there is any need to discuss options at that point. The Careers Department will be open, and a number of other staff will also be available for consultation.
