Organising your travel to Ty'n y Berth Mountain Centre.
Groups should aim to arrive between 2 and 4 pm on your arrival day. This gives time to settle in and issue equipment before the evening meal. On your departure day we need to have the buildings vacated by 10 am to allow our cleaning staff access – we often have weekend groups arriving on Friday evening.
By Train:
There is a reliable, relatively quick (about 4 hrs) service from London Euston to Machynlleth with only one change to make at Birmingham New Street. Centre minibuses will meet your group at Machynlleth Station, a 15 minute drive completing the journey. Recommended trains : Outward Euston dep.10:45 arr. Machynlleth 14:47 Euston dep.12:45 arr. By Coach:
Unless you can negotiate with a local coach company that your school deals with regularly, this can be expensive - shop around! However, if you have booked both centres and are bringing 40 to 60 children, it can be much more cost effective. Though it takes longer than the train (usually a minimum of 6 hours), it is certainly very convenient, being door to door. We have tracked down a coach company local to us who offer a good service at a very reasonable price. Owen’s Coaches (Oswestry) 01691 652126.
By Car or Self Drive Minibus:
From SE London the most reliable and quickest route is M25, M1, M6, M54, A5 (Shrewsbury by-pass) then A458 to Welshpool. Stay on the A458 through the town following signs for Dolgellau. 26 miles from Welshpool is the Mallwyd roundabout. Do not turn left here for Machynlleth (adds 6 extra miles to your journey!). Instead turn right and continue towards Dolgellau on the A470. After about 7 miles, turn left at The Cross Foxes Hotel onto the A487 towards Machynlleth. Stay on the A487 and after 5 miles you will enter a 30 mph speed limit. Ty'n y Berth is the old school building on the right, just inside the limit signs.
To get to Bryn Coedwig from Ty’n y Berth, go down the A487 towards Machynlleth. After about 11/2 miles, turn sharp left at the Braich Goch Hotel and drive down through Corris village. Stay on this minor road for about 11/2 miles. Drive through Aberllefenni, past the slate workshops on your right and follow the road round to the right by the lake. Stay on this narrow road for a further 500 metres. Bryn Coedwig is the old school building on your left.
