Summer 2006 Developments

LGfL is working with LA partners on a long term project to procure a new generation learning environment suitable for BSF and other aspiring schools. While a London-wide procurement will achieve substantial economies of scale the cost of this new MLE may need to be met from participating schools' own budgets.

Meanwhile, the current LGfL Learning Platform supplied by Digitalbrain is undergoing some major enhancements this summer and will remain in place, free to schools, for the foreseeable future.

Based on your requests and much of the work in the portal development group, this will be a significant series of enhancements.

Current users can expect to see:

A New Webmail interface
A redesign of the existing webmail interface complete with true email addresses being displayed and a faster response time. (Migration begins in late June)
A New Global Address book
A shareable address book throughout the school or the LEA to save you having to copy or navigate to find common contacts. (July)
A New Personal Calendar
A redesigned calendar will feature import and export to MS Outlook. This will include re-occuring appointments and a task manager to help users organise their priorities.
A New XHTML editor
It's goodbye to the slow Javascript editor and hello to the new rich text editor for both emails and webpages. Featuring undo, redo and a direct paste facillity for tables and structures created in MS Word this promises to be a very exciting step forward. (begins with new webmail interface, rolled out to page editing late July)
A New Look and Feel
The look and feel is similar to the secondary one featured at BETT but it has evolved further. It will not be the primary version however as this will become a seperate product. The redesign will encompass all aspects of the platform including folder listing view. (July)
Assignments and Markbook functionality
LGfL are currently discussing buying the higher level functionalities of digitalbrain's existing platform to enhance our exisiting offer to schools and LAs. More on this as it develops.
