Feature

Digitalbrain site release 1.6.4

Digitalbrain would like to inform you of the upcoming changes as part of site release 1.6.4 due for release in early February

Toolbar revisions
Over the Christmas break Digitalbrain have produced a new version of the Toolbar present on all pages, with two key objectives. Firstly to improve how accessible it is when using a keyboard or screen reader to navigate. Secondly Digitalbrain have written it to use considerably less resource than before in order to help reduce page load time.

Right hand side of toolbar

While the new Toolbar will be visually similar to its predecessor, a number of redundant options have been stripped out to improve its usability. In addition the Webmail and Calendar options will be displayed in the right hand navigation area to improve access to these commonly used applications. The icon  linking to the Webmail application will also feature an indicator in the shape of a star when you have new mail.

Performance improvements
As part of Digitalbrain's ongoing programme of improvements they have been trialling an improved caching system for pages and assets on the platform. As part of site release 1.6.4 they will be activating this caching for a number of public facing areas. The intention of this caching is to reduce the impact of common site actions, such as access control checks. In plain English; More caching = better site performance.

 Help
Following the introduction of Digitalbrain's new Support Portal they have populated it with the help files, known issues and knowledge base articles previously contained on the Help and Updates sites. With the first phase of this work now complete they will be making a number of changes to ensure you receive a consistent experience when looking for help on using Digitalbrain. All previous URL's and links will continue to work, but after release 1.6.4 they will now all direct you to the Digitalbrain Support Portal.

One feature you may or may not have used is the ability to search both Digitalbrain's Help Files and Knowledge Base held within their support portal. The search facility can be accessed on the left hand side of every page and allows quick access to relevant help materials.

In addition, while you are raising a support ticket your message will be scanned as you type. The system will then provide suggestions that relate to keywords you have entered will be given to help your resolve your issue as swiftly as possible.

Deletion of old Mail Discussions
As mentioned in previous Site Release updates the old Mail Discussion feature within Digitalbrain has been superseded by the new Forums application. In order to allow for further improvements to the code behind Digitalbrain it has become necessary for us to remove these discussions from the platform.

Following Site Release 1.6.4 all mail discussion objects on the platform will be deleted. What does this mean for you?

  • If you wish to keep the contents of an existing Mail Discussion we would recommend copying the information into a new Forum object or a Learning Module page.
  • After site release 1.6.4 you will no longer be able to create or participate in mail discussions.
  • Customer support will have access to a complete back up of all discussions on the platform and will be able to provide you with their contents if you have not been able to store them elsewhere prior to their deletion.

Improved WebDAV protocol
In order to better support new operating systems and browser types Digitalbrain have been working on a replacement WebDAV client for the platform. This new client will run alongside the existing implementation but will require you to create your WebDAV connections in a different way. To take advantage of the new features you will need to create a new WebDAV connection. Instructions on how to do this will be published with the release notes for 1.6.4 when it goes live.

The key improvements are; support for Apple Mac's, support for Vista, improved reliability and improved speed.

MySchool link
In order to provide simple school address book functionality before the release of the Shared Address Book last year, a series of 'MySchool' links were created in every LGfL users account. These links allowed quick access to the schools groups folder.

While they provided a useful function they also dramatically increased the number of group memberships each account had, causing access control checks to take longer than normal when viewing objects and pages within Digitalbrain. Now the new Webmail platform and Shared Address Book are live, the requirement for these links has been negated. With this in mind Digitalbrain have now removed these links from all LGfL user accounts to help improve the access time for pages and objects within the LGfL community.

Digitalbrain welcome feedback from all customers on your experience using the platform, if you have any comments or suggestions please do not hesitate to contact us at customersupport@digitalbrain.com or call them on 08700 777 655.

The upgrade to Fronter 81 will be available from 1st February. LAs will be upgraded automatically so schools will inherit the new features without the need to request an upgrade.

Release note: Fronter 73

Fronter 73 is a special release of the Fronter Open Learning Platform for the London MLE project. This version includes some important new features as well as improving existing functionality in order to meet the requirements of London schools.

E-learning Course
An important part of this release is eight e-learning courses for teachers that will guide them through the new learning platform.

The e-learning course consists of the following modules:
  •  How to get started
  •  An introduction to the Hand in folder
  •  How to create Pages and Learning paths
  •  How to share information
  •  An introduction to Multiple choice tests and course surveys
  •  How to share resources
  •  How to get an Overview of students´ activity
  •  How to promote online Student collaboration

The modules feature video, audio, animation and screen recordings to guide users though the most common operations in Fronter and explain the concepts. At the end of each module, you can test yourself to review your knowledge.

Integration and import of user data

Fronter have added support for several new Management Information Systems (MIS) so that user/ class data can be imported.

The London Managed Learning Environment (MLE) can be integrated with the school’s MIS so that pupils’class changes will be automatically applied to the London MLE on a daily basis.

The following MIS will be supported in Fronter 73:
* Capita SIMS.NET
* RM Integris
* Wouton Samuel
* Pearson Phoenix
* Serco (limited support due to current lack of response)

For all imported users Fronter can generate usernames and passwords which can be extracted and printed by the Fronter Administrator at  the school. All usernames which are generated by Fronter will be unique throughout London, which means if a user changes school within the London MLE, the user will be able to keep their existing username.

Multiple upload

The multiple upload function in Fronter has been improved so that it is now even easier to upload several documents at the same time. In the new version, you can upload individual files up to 500 megabytes each and the total size of all files uploaded in one operation is only limited by the available storage space and the speed of your internet connection. The new multiple upload function recognizes your local network drives and allows you to drag and drop files or folders into the file requester. Due to the Becta accessibility requirements we have also kept the single file upload function as this is not dependent on the Java applet technology.

For schools that wish to transfer content from their old Virtual Learning Environment to the Fronter platform the new multiple upload function will be of great help. By using this functionality each school can upload content directly to the room where it should reside all at once. IMS content packages can be uploaded and unzipped directly into the archive as well.

Skin for primary schools

Fronter 73 features a new skin for primary schools with brighter colours and larger icons. The style is created in order to appeal to the younger children aged 5 to 8 years old. There are great possibilities to adapt the Fronter Learning Platform to the needs of a class, for instance the name and the number of the tools can be changed at any time.

Other improvements

 - The Statistics function and the Disk storage function has been made available to the local administrators of the schools. Previously this was only available to Top Level Administrators.

 - The Open, Edit, Save function which makes it possible to edit a document in Fronter without downloading it to your computer is now available for users of Mozilla Firefox.

 - Notifications on upcoming assignments, including tests are now available for students on their today page.

 - A new layout editor is included in the pages tool.
