Disposal in Subduction Zones

By placing the nuclear waste in the subduction zone the material would be drawn down into the earths crust.

Once in the mantle (molten magma) the waste becomes diluted and would only return to the surface after millions of years.

Strengths

Weaknesses

 Long term solution as subduction process takes millennia and return to surface takes millions of years

 No proof that this method would work

 The location of the subduction zone could clash in terms of international law and country land boundaries

 UK has no subduction zone

 Costly
