In 1903 there were 11,601 teachers in SBL schools. The job they had to do was a tough one. In 1870 there could be up to 80 pupils in a class. By 1903 this had been reduced to an average of 42. Most had gone through years of training to become teachers and although their pay was regular it was not generous.
