The main purpose of the SBL was to make sure the children of London were taught to read, to write, and to do maths. But the SBL wanted to improve the lives of London children in other ways. To make things better for London children it believed there were three problems that it had to deal with:
- Illiteracy
- Bad Manners
- Dirt
The SBL had other problems with its pupils. These included poor attendance and the type of punishment used by teachers to control ‘bad manners’.
