More Resizing Tips

The freeware utilities for resizing photographs are very useful but inevitably, when designing web sites you will need to use a decent graphics application such as Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Photoshop.

There are a couple of older guides from Digitalbrain online explaining some resizing techniques using these applications which are still useful.

Resizing .gifs

As mentioned in the general graphics information, a GIF only has 256 colours. When you try to resize a GIF image you often get distortion. You can avoid this by increasing the colour palette to 16 million before resizing.

This is because graphic packages often use smoothing algorithms to retain a clear image. However 256 colours is not enough to be able to apply this. So increase to 16 million, "smart" resize and then when you save the image as a .gif it converts back to 256 colours but will look much clearer.
