23-11-2011: London Grid for Learning and Open-City launch learning resources about architecture and the built environment

Open-City’s education programmes lead the way in learning about architecture and urban design. They engage teachers with the key issues that shape learning through the built environment, inspiring young people to explore the architecture of London, equipping them with creative skills that support learning in and out of the classroom.

LGfL and Open-City are working in partnership to develop new online resources that bring increased understanding of the built environment and issues surrounding sustainability in building design.

My Green School: Exploring Our Green Building

My Green School: Exploring Our Green Building has been designed to help teachers and parents guide 7 -12 year olds through exciting investigations into sustainability and design, and to allow them to create their own dazzling designs for an eco-school building.

It is jam-packed with activities that can fit into your timescale, including:

  • A step-by-step guide to investigating architecture and sustainable design
  • How to use your school or home for your investigations
  • Links to the curriculum
  • Activity ideas & session plans including learning outcomes & materials
  • Eco-design facts and figures

Bob Usher (LGfL Content Manager) said ‘ How often do we pause to think about how the architecture around us influences our daily lives and how we interact with the environment  we spend our time in? Working in partnership with Open-City allows LGfL to support the development of understanding with the next generation of engineers, architects and designers with practical curriculum linked activities for all LGfL connected schools.’

Senior Lecturer in Primary and Early Years Education at Middlesex University, Fiona Bailey said: “My Green School is a fabulous initiative which presents teachers and children with an opportunity to connect with sustainability in a creative and meaningful way. The quality and diversity of the entries is very impressive, as is seeing children engaging so with such an important topic.”
